Ashford & Simpson Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, started their life and songwriting partnerships in the mid-1960s, writing for songs such as “California Soul for The 5th Dimension, “Cry Like A Baby” for Aretha Franklin and “Let’s Go Get Stoned” and “I Don’t Need No Doctor” for Ray Charles. Their work with Charles brought them to the attention of Motown chief Berry Gordy. After joining Motown staff in 1966, Ashford & Simpson wrote all but one of the late-1960s Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell singles, including hits such as the original version of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “Your Precious Love”, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”, and “You’re All I Need to Get By”. Carole King & Gerry Goffin The songwriting duo of Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote many of the 1960s biggest hits including; ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’, ‘Take Good Care of My Baby’, and ‘The Loco-Motion’, and their songs have been recorded by legendary artists such as Aretha Franklin, James Taylor and the Beatles Meeting in college, Carole King and Gerry Goffin began collaborating as songwriters, with King writing the music and Goffin the lyrics. Their friendship blossomed into a relationship, and when King became pregnant and they married in August 1959. Goffin wrote the lyrics for Carole King’s 1959 single “Oh Neil”, an answer song to her friend Neil Sedaka’s “Oh! Carol”. The single’s B-side, “A Very Special Boy”, was a Goffin-King composition – although the record was not a hit, the couple both secured songwriting contracts at Don Kirshner’s Aldon Music Publishing company in Manhattan. A collaboration which produced an astounding eight consecutive number-one albums, seventy three singles and 18 number 1 hits for one of the most commercially successful bands of all time; the Swedish super group ABBA.
