Between 1962 and 1972 the Burt Bacharach and Hal David were everywhere. Hardly a week went by without a least one of their songs appearing on the Billboard Singles Chart. Their first success came with “The Story of My Life,” by Marty Robbins Driven which reached #15 which was followed by another collaboration for Perry Como’s “Magic Moments.” Neither song gave any indication of what was to follow; a string of hit songs for some of the world’s best-known recording artists. Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, started their life and songwriting partnerships in the mid-1960s, writing for songs such as “California Soul for The 5th Dimension, “Cry Like A Baby” for Aretha Franklin and “Let’s Go Get Stoned” and “I Don’t Need No Doctor” for Ray Charles. Their work with Charles brought them to the attention of Motown chief Berry Gordy. Their friendship blossomed into a relationship, and when King became pregnant and they married in August 1959. Goffin wrote the lyrics for Carole King’s 1959 single “Oh Neil”, an answer song to her friend Neil Sedaka’s “Oh! Carol”.
