Bernard Edwards & Nile Rodgers wrote and produced many of the most popular and memorable disco and funk hits of the 1970s and 1980s. Meeting as session musicians in New York, the pair formed many bands before teaming up with singer Norma Jean Wright to become Chic. Between 1962 and 1972 the Burt Bacharach and Hal David were everywhere. Hardly a week went by without a least one of their songs appearing on the Billboard Singles Chart. Their first success came with “The Story of My Life,” by Marty Robbins Driven which reached #15 which was followed by another collaboration for Perry Como’s “Magic Moments.” Neither song gave any indication of what was to follow; a string of hit songs for some of the world’s best-known recording artists. Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, started their life and songwriting partnerships in the mid-1960s, writing for songs such as “California Soul for The 5th Dimension, “Cry Like A Baby” for Aretha Franklin and “Let’s Go Get Stoned” and “I Don’t Need No Doctor” for Ray Charles. Their work with Charles brought them to the attention of Motown chief Berry Gordy. After joining Motown staff in 1966, Ashford & Simpson wrote all but one of the late-1960s Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell singles, including hits such as the original version of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “Your Precious Love”, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”, and “You’re All I Need to Get By”.
